Why I Ride

Why I support The Children's Hospital

Fundamentally, I believe each of us benefit when we find a way to reach out side of ourselves and do something for the sake of someone else. Getting involved in something that isn't just about me creates a connection to my fellow human beings. It piques my interest, puts my life in perspective and establishes a relationship to other people's lives.

Supporting The Children's Hospital gives me a chance to connect...and what better way to reach out than to help kids who genuinely need their fellow human beings to connect with them.

The Children's Hospital is one of the best hospitals for kids in the United States. The caring staff and physicians there have one thing in mind--what's best for kids and their families. Children's conducts more pediatric research than any other hospital in the Rocky Mountain region--and they're in the top 10 percent of research hospitals in the region. It also trains more pediatricians and pediatric specialists than any other regional hospital.

Why I ride the Courage Classic

Last year, I was looking for an event to participate in that would permit me to give of myself. But let's me realistic: I like sleeping in my own bed and enjoying hot meals everyday, let along when I'm in the middle of a 154-mile, three-day, three-mountain-pass bike ride!

Last year, I wanted to see if I could even accomplish the Courage Classic. I embraced the challenged, but deep down I didn't want to disappoint myself, my supporters, or The Children's Hospital. I was grateful that this event was close to home so that I could recover each night in my own bed.

I am by no means the star of this ride or even a fabulously successful participant...I'm in awe of the disabled riders, kids, and dedicated cyclists with whom I get to ride. But I did it! And, I know I can do it again. Just knowing I can complete such a challenge for the benefit of other people is a great reward.

Why you should support me

As I said, I believe it is important for each of us to find a way to connect to those around us. Maybe you read to residents at a senior home or local library. Planting a tree might be your thing, or you might have your own favorite charity ride. But, if you are looking for an easy way to connect or just like the idea of helping kids, I encourage you to support my Courage Classic ride. I guarantee you'll be a little more interested the next time you read about Children's in the newspaper. Or, ask me if I've recovered the next time you see me and you?ll be sure to feel connected!

Why I Support The Children's Hospital

Sonja was born in November 2008 with complex heart and digestive issues. Her parents founded Sonja’s Soldiers in her honor because, thanks to Children’s, baby Sonja is growing up – one day at a time.

Spencer was struck by a car while riding his bike when he was 6 years old. With Children’s help, he fought severe head injuries to become the healthy teen – and strong rider – he is today.

Nick was diagnosed with Leukemia when he was 5 years old. His parents founded Team Nickcycle to support Children’s for providing him with the best possible treatment.

Ellaura rides to give back, she says. Now healthy and active at 17, she has been a neurology patient at Children’s since she was 4 years old.
